This review is on the Blu Premium Starter Kit I purchased this kit after trying the disposable Blu electronic cigarette I purchased from my local drug store.
Cons Battery loses charge quickly. Nicotine cartridges lose some potency after a day of heavy use. Larger than a standard cigarette. Bottom Line Blu eCigs are much tastier and cleaner than "analog" cigarettes to the point where afterwards, you may find regular cigarettes kind of disgusting. If you're a beginning "vaper," you'll find Blu eCigs easy to use and surprisingly satisfying in taste. Technology helps me once again. After years of smoking (yes, everyone nagged me to quit) the only thing that has helped me reduce the amount of nicotine and other harmful substances I'm exposing myself to—without completely quitting—is e-cigarettes. Blu eCigs were the first eCigs I tried, and they have been surprisingly effective in helping me kick "analog" cigs and instead become a "vaper." You don't "smoke" an eCig, because there is no smoke. Instead, you inhale nicotine-infused vapor; thus the habit is known as "vaping." Blu eCigs have a fairly authentic tobacco taste, plus a decent back-of-the throat hit many smokers will relish (and will understand what I mean). The kit ($69.95) comes with a USB charger and car charger, and the company just released a new Starter Pack for $34.99. This new pack is the same as one I reviewed except it has only one battery (versus two in the original pack) and extra pockets to hold nicotine or non-nicotine flavor cartridges (more about them later). The one enhancement I'd like is a longer battery charge. That said, Blu Cigs are enjoyable enough to make me not want analog cigarettes. I won't get ahead of myself and say "ever again," but I haven't touched an actual cigarette now in a month. How Blu eCigs Work A rechargeable Blu eCig comprises a battery, which is a small, black, slim tube, with an LED at the tip. When you smoke the eCig—or more accurately, "vape" it— the tip lights up a bright Blu. The other end of the tube is grooved so that you can screw a nicotine cartridge into it. The cartridges contain nicotine and flavorings. When you take a pull on a Blu, you are actually inhaling the vaporized nicotine. The company sent me its original eCig starter kit for testing. It's packaged as slickly as any other consumer technology product. The package looks like a big cigarette box—it even has a flip top. Inside is a plastic black case that doubles as a charger and looks like a cigarette carrying case with Blu's logo. The charger case connects to a computer's USB port, and there is also a car charger included. Two batteries are in the starter kit. This is handy because you can have one battery charging while you are vaping on the other. And trust me, if you are anything more than a half a pack-a-day smoker, you will vape furiously, at first. Also inside the kit are a USB cable and a Welcome Guide. The kit also has five cartridges of assorted flavors: two are classic tobacco (my favorite), one menthol, one cherry, and one vanilla. Cherry and vanilla are my least favorite with vanilla coming in dead last. It has too much of a chemical after-taste, as if I were sucking in the smoke of a vanilla-scented candle. The menthol was cool and refreshing, surprising to me, because I've always found menthol cigarettes gross. In any case, I found the taste of Blu eCigs a lot more enjoyable than Njoy eCigs, which had a very chemical aftertaste. The Cartridges The cartridges have a silicone tip and a built-in atomizer. The atomizer helps boost vapor production for that smoking experience. The company says one cartridge is good for 250 puffs, about a pack of cigarettes. You can re-order cartridges through the site or from a retailer (a five pack box can be purchased online at Blu's store for $12 or $13, depending on the flavor). Cartridges have different nicotine levels. The ones that come with the kit have the highest amounts of nicotine, at about 13-16 mgs. There are medium-level (9-12 mg) and low-level (6-8 mg) cartridges, and you can also purchase flavored cartridges with no nicotine. The other eCigs I tested, Logic and Njoy, also offer varying levels of nicotine. eCig companies represent nicotine levels in one of two ways: in milligrams per milliliter (mgs) or in percentage. Blu represents nicotine levels in mgs. Its highest level of nicotine is in the classic tobacco cartridge at 16 mgs or 1.6 percent nicotine. Comparatively, Logic's highest eCig cartridge is 24 mgs per ml or 2.4 percent. NJoy offers the highest concentration of nicotine—a Traditional Bold cartridge has 4.5 percent. The entire starter kit costs $69.95 and can be purchased at Blu's online store. Or you can enter your ZIP code on the company's site to find local retailers. Vapor Ingredients There has been a lot of controversy over the ingredients in eCigs and whether they are safe or not (beyond the undisputed fact that nicotine is a poison, of course!). Under the FAQ section of the Blu website the e-liquid (the stuff on the cartridge that makes the vapor) ingredients are listed as: distilled water, nicotine (in the non-nicotine-free cartridges), FCC grade vegetable glycerin natural flavors, artificial flavors, and citric acid. It would be nice to know exactly what those flavors were. The Experience The Blu battery with a cartridge attached is about the size of a regular cigarette. It's heavier, though. The hard casing also makes it a little uncomfortable to hold the Blu e-cig the same way I would hold an analog cig— in-between my index and ring fingers in a "v" shape. Instead, it's more comfortable to hold the device as many would a cigar. By contrast, the Njoy King more closely replicates the size of a traditional cigarette. The tobacco-flavored cartridge produced the most authentic smoking experience. The atomizer helps release a fairly thick, odorless cloud of vapor. I felt as if I were actually drawing on a real cigarette, albeit a very light one. The only problem I encountered as I used the eCig throughout the span of a day-and-half was that the vapor cloud got thinner and the tobacco taste started to dull after about eight hours. The cartridge was not empty but it seemed to lose potency. The battery life is rather weak. I had to charge it up after vaping during the span of about two hours. Now, I was vaping probably more than most users, but I would prefer if the battery life was a little longer. The one difficulty with eCigs is that it's hard to know when you've had enough. With a regular cigarette it's easy to tell—when you get down to the filter! A handy feature of Blu eCigs is that the tip's LED will flash five times to tell you that you have "puffed" more than six times in the space of a minute. The only problem with this feature is that the light also flashes when the eCig needs to be charged. So, it's a little confusing: Is it flashing because you are pulling too much, or because the battery is dying? If you know that the cartridge is pretty fresh and the battery recently charged then it's likely because you are puffing too much. Blu eCigs are one of three brands of the more popular "ready-made" vaping kits I've tried; the other two include Logic and NJoy. Blu tastes pretty authentic, and the Blu LED that lights when you take a draw just looks cool. This is not en eCig for those who want to vape inconspicuously. Vaping with it outside always draws a few curious glances. Blu eCigs are the best-tasting of the three I've tried, The battery does not last as long as a Logic eCig, because the Blu battery is smaller. Still, the actual charging case did hold its own charge for over two days before I had to reconnect it to a USB port. Fortunately, I was introduced to the world of eCigs with Blu. The best endorsement I can give is this: I've reached the point where I find regular cigarettes and their smell unappealing. I like Blu, although hard-core vapers who are into making their own nicotine flavors (called ejuice) may scoff at Blu as a newbie eCig. For their vape newbie-friendly ease of use and satisfying taste, Blu Cigs receive four out of five stars and PCMag's Editors' Choice for eCigs.','url':'http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2422408,00.asp','og_descr':'Blu eCigs are much tastier and cleaner than \'analog\' cigarettes to the point where afterwards, you may find regular cigarettes kind of disgusting. Electronic cigarettes really have taken the world by storm, there are so many people now making the transition over to them from tobacco cigarettes. For those of you who don’t yet use E cigarettes but want to give them a try, you will probably wonder where to buy them. Should you buy your E cigarette starter kit from the vendors at the local mall, from your local convenience store, or from an online store? I know quite a few people who have bought a cheap E cigarette starter kit from someone at the mall, in most cases they have been fairly disappointed with what they bought after hearing great things about E cigarettes. The retailers in the malls have a tendency to sell lower quality products, these might seem pretty good at first glance and first sample, but before long any smoker will realise that they don’t satisfy our urges like tobacco does. This is not good for smokers who are looking for an alternative to tobacco, they will end up turning back to tobacco. So for this reason I would recommend buying your E cigarette starter kit from an online store, direct from the manufacturer. This way you have got time to sit and think about what it is that you are going to buy, you can spend time looking through E cigarette reviews to work out what device is going to be the best one for you. Rather than being rushed into something that you may not like, by people who will probably not be in business the next time you visit the mall. As you would imagine, you get everything that you need to get started with E cigarettes in a starter kit. So what is that? The most basic and essential parts are the battery, a charger and nicotine cartridges. But many companies offer a bit more than this in their kits. V2 Cigs for example, in their cheapest kit – the Economy Kit – for $59.95 you get the following – This doesn’t seem like a lot, but its enough for you to get started in the world of electronic cigarettes. If you smoke a pack or more a day and you want to replace tobacco cigarettes completely, you will need a little more, you could either opt for another battery, or for a portable battery charger to keep you going all day, as one battery probably wont last a full days use without a recharge. With V2 you can either buy these extra parts separately or you could buy a slightly more comprehensive starter kit, such as their “Traveller Kit ”. With companies such as V2 Cigs, Green Smoke and so on the more expensive the starter kit the more things you get in it. The higher price tag doesn’t mean a higher quality product, from the cheapest to the most expensive the quality is the same (in the case of these brands, very high quality at that), you just get more for your money. Real Reviews If you take a look around E Cigarettes Buy you will find that there are reviews for almost all of the top brands of E cigarette. I own all of the devices that have been reviewed and I write honestly, this cant be said for the other spammy E cigarette websites out there. So take a bit of time a look through the rest of this site to see what appeals to you. I would recommend starting off with V2 Cigs though, for me this E cigarette replicates smoking tobacco better than any other. The tobacco flavors are genuine, the feel in your throat is spot on and the vapor produced is incredible, a lot like smoke. To read my V2 Cigs review – Click here.
